Your First Apartment Checklist For Indianapolis

You toured the ideal place with the optimal floor plan for your first apartment. Now, you filled out the lease, packed your bags, and you’re ready to move. However, knowing what you’ll need for your own place can be tricky. What items should make the list for your first apartment checklist for Indianapolis?

Here’s a list of the basics that you’ll want to move in. You might be able to bring some of these checklist items from your old home, but other pieces might take a trip to IKEA or Indianapolis’s local furniture outlet. Online stores like Amazon or Target are always helpful. We’ll also give you a short list of extra items that can make your first year more comfortable.

Indianapolis First Apartment Checklist: The Bedroom

These necessary items work perfectly for a one-bedroom apartment, as you need somewhere to put your bed and store your clothes. If you will lease a bigger apartment, these things also can go in a guest room.

  • Comforter or Blanket

  • Bedframe

  • Dresser drawers

  • Clothes hangers

Also nice:

  • Headboard

Indianapolis First Apartment Checklist: The Living Room

The family room is the space where you’ll spend most of your time. It’s also the place where you’ll have friends and family sit in (although all get-togethers end up in the kitchen).

  • Couch or a few cozy chairs

  • Additional seating

  • Coffee table

  • Entertainment center or TV stand

  • Electronics such as TV and audio equipment

Also nice:

  • Side tables

  • Shelves for books, DVDs, or decorations

  • Accent pillows and smaller blankets

  • Area rug

Indianapolis First Apartment Checklist: The Kitchen/Dining Area

The kitchen is easier to know what you need for a new renter because many of your appliances -- such as the stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher -- are already included. You only really need a table and chairs for the dining area, but we recommend being able to seat at least four people. Even if you live alone, it’s good to have room for a meal with family or friends.

  • Dining room table and chairs (seats 4)

  • Silverware, plates, and glasses (4 place settings)

  • Mugs

  • Can opener, spatula, kitchen scissors

  • Microwave-if not provided

  • A good frying pan or skillet

  • A cookie sheet

  • A sharp chef knife

  • Pot for soup

  • Oven mitts

Also Nice:

  • Shelves or a buffet for extra dishes

  • Coffee pot

  • Spices, including salt and pepper

  • Dish soap and scrub brush

  • Storage containers

  • Corkscrew, cheese grater, and other cooking items

  • A full knife set

  • Mixing bowls and measuring cups

  • Food -- It’s always helpful to move in with a fully-stocked kitchen

Indianapolis apartment bathroom

Indianapolis First Apartment Checklist: The Bathroom

The bathroom isn’t that hard to stock, as the bath tub, toilet, sinks, and mirrors are built in. If you’re stocking a guest bathroom, it only requires toilet paper, soap, and a small towel. There are only a few essentials needed in your main or master bath, which makes it pretty easy to fill.

  • Toilet paper

  • Soap

  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, and other individual toiletries

  • Shampoo

  • Bath and hand towels

  • Shower liner, shower curtain, and hooks

  • Trash can

Also Nice:

  • Shower mat

  • Wall hooks for towels and bathrobes

  • Toothbrush holder
